2011 Bob Whittam Environmental Award

The Severn Sound Environmental Association Annual Partners’ Reception was held at the Midland Public Library on Tuesday November 22nd. Several Mayors, Councillors, SSEA members, community service groups, volunteers and landowners attended to celebrate our partnerships, projects and award recipients.


Over the past year, the SSEA has worked with a number of organizations, individuals and businesses to monitor environmental quality and implement stewardship projects to protect the Severn Sound watershed. In total, 44 landowners and partners were recognized for their exceptional contributions to the Severn Sound environment.

2011 Bob Whittam Environmental Award

Sustainability Awards

Three awards were presented this year to deserving area businesses, institutions, communities and/or individuals who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, creativity and innovation in forging Sustainability now and for the future in the Severn Sound area.

.

 

From 1989 to 1997, renowned biologist and naturalist Bob Whittam was the Chair of the Public Advisory Committee for the Severn Sound Remedial Action Plan. Bob retired from his post in 1997, but his continued support of the Severn Sound Environmental Association is highly valued by the staff.

Each year we recognize those who are dedicated and truly interested in improving the Severn Sound Watershed and area. The nominees considered could include assisting the Severn Sound Environmental Association or developing their own initiative such as habitat restoration, stewardship, or environmental education, all of which promote a healthy Severn Sound ecosystem. 

The 2011 Bob Whittam Environmental Award was presented to John Boucher.

The presentation of the award took place at the Severn Sound Environmental Association Annual Partners’ Reception on November 22, 2011 at the Midland Public Library.

 

Township of Georgian Bay,  Mayor Larry Braid is presented on of three Sustainability award by SSEA Chair, Bob Jeffery (Right).The first award was presented to the Township of Georgian Bay in recognition of their efforts in incorporating sustainable principles into their planning process. A strategic plan process was implemented that provides the Township direction in the areas of enhancing the natural environment, strengthening the local economy and improving the quality of life for their residents. Township of Georgian Bay Mayor Larry Braid accepted the award.

Melissa and Nathan McCosker of 10fold Farms accepted the second Sustainability Award recognizing their creative and innovative farming practices as well as their enthusiasm in living and working in a sustainable way. From their garden design where tree trunks become shitake mushroom logs and home heating fuel, through to their use of brush to create hugelkulture beds, these recipients understand and promote sustainability every day.

The third Sustainability award was presented to André Sanche of Ciboulette et Cie A Food Shop, by SSEA Chair, Bob Jeffery.The final Sustainability award was presented to André Sanche of Ciboulette et Cie A Food Shop. André, the chef and owner of this local restaurant has demonstrated his support for sustainability through his dedication for training and continuous focus on waste, water and energy reduction initiatives. The foods available at Ciboulette et Cie derive from sustainable local sources.

Stewardship Awards

Over the past year, the SSEA has worked with a number of organizations, individuals and businesses to monitor environmental quality and implement stewardship projects to protect the Severn Sound watershed. This year approximately 38 landowners and partners were recognized for their exceptional contributions to the Severn Sound environment.

Thanks to all who were able to attend our Reception. The SSEA appreciates all of our partners and supporters. We look forward to continuing our cooperative partnerships in 2012.
