Stream
Rehabilitation Tree Planting
SSEA and our partners are
working together to improve surface water quality in North Simcoe by
helping landowners implement Best Management Practices, including tree
planting. Since 1992, over 192,000 tree seedlings have been planted
through our stream rehabilitation program.
With the support of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resource’s Community
Fisheries and Wildlife Involvement Program, SSEA provides free native
tree and shrub seedlings to landowners with eligible projects (while
quantities last). Priority is given to tree planting projects that
establish or widen buffers along streams, rivers and wetlands, such as:
-
Planting idle land,
cropland or hayfield to establish or widen a vegetated buffer to a
waterway.
-
Planting the slopes
of intermittent streams that flood in spring or during rain events.
Some landowners plant the seedlings themselves; however SSEA can also
coordinate volunteers and community groups (e.g. Scouts, local schools) to
plant some sites.
