The Ontario Drinking Water Stewardship Program

Are you looking to protect your local sources of drinking water?  Do you live near a municipal well or intake? 

The Clean Water Act has established a funding program to help you take action to protect your municipality’s drinking water sources. And, you can save money while doing it. Whether you are a farmer, landowner, or a small or medium business, this funding program can help you help your community. This is what good stewardship is all about.

Please note that applications must be completed in full and submitted to the SSEA Office at 67 Fourth Street in Midland for approval BEFORE payment can be considered.

Decommissioning unused wells and upgrading drinking water wells may prevent these wells from becoming pollutant pathways to municipal drinking water sources.  Funding is available to all landowners (residential, business, institutional, farm) whose properties are located within or extend into the 100 metre radius or the 2 year capture zone  of a municipal wellhead and/or a 200 metre radius of a municipal surface water intake.

The septic module will provide funding for the repair, upgrade, or replacement of faulty or malfunctioning septic systems that are located within or extend into the 100 metre radius or the 2 year capture zone of a municipal wellhead and/or a 200 metre radius of a municipal surface water intake.

Pollution prevention audits will be made available to small and medium-sized businesses that are located within or extend into the 100 metre radius of a municipal wellhead and/or a 200 metre radius of a municipal surface water intake.  These audits will be available to businesses that manufacture, handle, store, and dispose of materials into water, land, or air, and will identify threats to sources of municipal drinking water.

The purpose of runoff and erosion protection is to protect municipal drinking water sources from runoff contamination and soil erosion through properly constructing and/or restoring buffer strips and riparian zones.  Funding will be available to eligible registered farmers and all other landowners that are located within or extend into the 100 metre radius of a municipal wellhead and/or a 200 metre radius of a municipal surface water intake.
