Agriculture & Nature initiative
APPLY NOW: Funding to support improvements of natural features on your farm!
Through the Agriculture & Nature Initiative, farmers may be eligible for up to 100% funding to cover project costs, and the SSEA provides site-specific guidance and assistance with projects from start to finish.
You May Be Eligible If:
1. The project is located on farmland within the participating Severn Sound watershed area (see map)
2. The landowner has a 4th or 5th edition Environmental Farm Plan (EFP) or is willing to get one
3. The landowner is willing to sign a land-use agreement (10 year term)
Eligible Projects:
SSEA will support farmers in creating or enhancing natural features like pollinator habitat, streamside buffers, shelterbelts, tree and shrub plantings, and native grassland.
Strip planting of perennial cover to create grassed waterways or to manage salinity within a field (including terraces and farmable berms)
Convert marginal and high-risk annual cropland to permanent grassland (or perennial biomass crops; includes establishment of native or tame forages).
Creation or widening of buffers (trees or shrubs) in agricultural fields adjacent to surface water sources, as well as other actions to protect existing riparian areas such as reshaping edges and fields.
Establishment of pollinator strips or other perennial cover for pollinator habitat or other biodiversity purposes in fields or field margins of existing cropland (area planted with high value plants that pollinators like).
Establishment of shelterbelts for farmyards, livestock facilities, and fields as well as intercropping with trees on annual cropland.

The SSEA Agriculture & Nature Initiative is funded in part by the Resilient Agricultural Landscape Program Marginal Lands Initiative, which aims to create or enhance natural features on marginal agricultural lands for:
– Climate change mitigation including greenhouse gas reduction and carbon sequestration
– Climate change adaptation
– Improved soil health
– Reduced nutrients losses from agriculture
– Enhanced pollinator habitat
– Increased biodiversity
This project is funded in part by the governments of Canada and Ontario under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP), a five year, federal-provincial-territorial initiative.
