What residents/cottagers can do
Residents should remain vigilant on several issues:
- Keep watch for blue green algae blooms and report them to the Spills Action Centre at 1-866-663-8477 and/or Simcoe Muskoka Health Unit Blue-Green Algae Reporting
- Prevent the spread of invasive species through washing watercraft (Clean, Drain, Dry), plant native species in gardens, and avoid using non-native and invasive species for landscaping Invasive Species
- Ensure shorelines are as natural as possible to encourage natural resilience and lake health including “no-mow, no-chemicals” buffer zone adjacent to the water’s edge to intercept runoff. Some resources include:
- The Natural Shorelines Project
- Minimize Your Impact and Protect Your Shoreline Fact Sheet, SSEA
- Shoreline Owner’s Guide – Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Association
- Become an SSEA Citizen Scientist! Contact our program assistant Emily Edgley at citizenscience@severnsound.ca and learn more about our programs at Citizen Science Monitoring Programs In Severn Sound
- Learn to distinguish nuisance from potentially harmful algae growth in SSEA’s video on algae in the area:
SSEA Monthly Rainfall
Ice-free, May to October monthly rainfall (mm) compared with long-term average monthly rainfall at the Midland and Lafontaine sites. Long-term data is based on rain data collected between 2008 and 2025.
